Job Description

Mission

In addition to being a Penetrant Line Operator, this operator accomplishes hands-on training of Penetrant Line Operators. This operator also oversees the qualification and certification of Penetrant Line Operators and provides feedback to supervision.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Train and Certify Penetrant Line Operators.

a. Progress new or transfer Penetrant Line Operators through the qualification and certification process. Trains employees on new skills and works with employees to improve performance to satisfactory levels or maintain satisfactory performance.

b. Perform module audits

c. Evaluate employee against certification requirements.

d. Gives objective, fact-based input for performance reviews. Participate in performance measure feedback and performance review of Penetrant Line Operators.

e. In performing training/certification duties, avoids favoritism or the perception of favoritism.

2. Training Program Support

a. Create and revise training modules.

b. Establish and revise written evaluation.

c. Design and update skills demonstration and criteria for Qualification and certification.

• Penetrant Line Operators support and audits

a. Maintain records of employees and overall departments.

b. Perform ongoing evaluation of employees and random audits.

c. Stay current on Penetrant Line Operator techniques in all aspects of interpreting.

a. Is sensitive to and proactively supports the maintenance of a harassment/discrimination free environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Current Penetrant Line Operator Trainer certification desired or Tat’s certified within 30 days.

• Must be self motivated (as determined by feedback from the Trainer Coordinator or Production Supervisor) and capable of high performance with little or no supervision.

• Must consistently rate in the top 20% in Project Team Build issues and demonstrate good work habits, including a history of quality workmanship.

• Must be free of any disciplinary action for Quality, Productivity or Behavior over the last 12 months.

• Position required incumbent be willing, as required by production needs, to change department assignments, work with others in more than one department, and to adjust shift schedules.

• Outstanding performance as determined by feedback from the Trainer Coordinator or Production Supervisor) in prior progression through the Penetrant Line Operator Training and Certification Program is desired. (Does not apply to Penetrant Line Operators who did not have access to the program.)

• Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions, make progress observations, and accurately record technical data required.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Instructions must be clear and unambiguous; consistently assures directions are clearly understood resulting in work that rarely, if ever, needs to be redone due to the quality of communication.

• Must have good facilitation skill and the ability to teach individuals and/or small groups.

• Satisfactory attendance record required.

• Satisfactory safety record required.

• Must have held a Penetrant Line Operator position for a minimum of 12 months during the prior 3 years.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Penetrant Line Operation

Objective: to complete all steps in the preparation and application of penetrant to castings.

Typical Activities

Visually inspects castings for surface dirt; cleans and degreases as necessary.

Chemically etches specific castings by local or swab etching, which removes a small amount of metal; neutralizes parts with water and dries; neutralizes holding tank.

Places clean castings on penetrant line and applies fluorescent penetrant liquid using hand-held, electro-static sprayer; allows penetrant to be absorbed.

Washes castings to remove penetrant after specified time; pre-dries with fans and places castings in drying cabinets.

Places castings in developing cabinet for automatic application of powdered developer.

Visually inspects castings; cleans and degreases as needed.

Wears protective gear during line operation.

Maintenance and Housecleaning.

Objective: to maintain penetrant line equipment and work area in good working order.

Typical Activities

Performs maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

Keeps work area and materials clean and orderly.

Safety.

Objective: to take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.

Adheres to plant and department safety rules.

Safely operates all equipment and tools.

Experience & Education

High School Graduation or GED (necessary for NDT certification.

TRAINING

Training is provided on the job.

Level 1 Penetrant Inspection Courses.

Level 1 Penetrant Inspection Certification.

Required Skills

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

High School Graduation or GED (necessary for NDT certification.

Ability to write, and read and follow specifications on Tech Cards.

Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing twenty to forty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.

Ability to work in difficult working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes and other elements for extended periods of time.
