Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation (LISW-S)

Role Overview

The Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation (LISW-S) is responsible for delivering high-quality clinical services while providing supervision to licensed and unlicensed clinical staff within a behavioral health setting. This role ensures that all clinical services are delivered in alignment with evidence-based practices, ethical standards, and state regulatory requirements.

The LISW-S plays a critical role in maintaining clinical integrity, improving client outcomes, and ensuring compliance across all treatment and documentation processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct clinical services including comprehensive assessments, diagnosis (where applicable per state regulations), treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions for individuals, families, or groups.
• Develop, implement, and regularly review individualized treatment plans, ensuring alignment with client needs, clinical standards, and payer requirements.
• Provide clinical supervision to social workers, counselors, and other behavioral health staff in accordance with state supervision guidelines.
• Review and approve clinical documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory and reimbursement standards.
• Monitor client progress and adjust treatment approaches based on clinical outcomes and evolving needs.
• Ensure all services are delivered in compliance with HIPAA, state licensing boards, Medicaid/insurance requirements, and organizational policies.
• Support crisis intervention and risk assessment, ensuring appropriate escalation and documentation of critical incidents.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, nurses, case managers, and support staff to ensure coordinated care delivery.
• Participate in audits, quality assurance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives related to clinical services.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited institution
• Active, unrestricted LISW-S license in the state of practice
• Minimum of 3–5 years of post-licensure clinical experience in behavioral or mental health settings
• Demonstrated experience providing clinical supervision to behavioral health professionals

Required Certifications and Compliance (U.S.)

• Active LISW-S license in good standing with the State Social Work Board
• Completion of state-required supervision training (if applicable)
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification (preferred or required based on setting)
• HIPAA Certification and compliance training
• Mandated Reporter Training (as required by state)
• Ability to pass background check, credential verification, and any required healthcare screenings
• National Provider Identifier (NPI) number
• Credentialing eligibility with major insurance providers (Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payers, as applicable)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in residential, outpatient, or community-based behavioral health settings
• Familiarity with evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, or substance use treatment approaches
• Experience working with diverse populations including high-risk or underserved groups
• Prior involvement in program development or clinical operations improvement
