Licensed Clinical Social Worker- Proton Therapy

The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center (CPTC) is excited to invite applications for the position of Social Worker at our state-of-the-art facility in Wallingford, CT. CPTC dba Connecticut Proton is the first proton therapy center in Connecticut. It is a joint venture of Hartford Healthcare and Yale New Haven Healthcare.

The Social Worker is a member of the proton therapy care team and serves as one of the first points of contact for patients and their families. This position provides a welcoming, compassionate, and professional experience while supporting the patient's travel, lodging, transportation, and other supportive intervention needs. The ideal candidate is compassionate, culturally responsive, highly organized, and experienced in oncology, medical social work, or a related healthcare setting. The Social Worker helps ensure that patients receiving proton therapy are supported not only medically, but emotionally, socially, and practically throughout their treatment journey. The position plays an essential role in reducing barriers to care, strengthening coping and support systems, and promoting the best possible treatment experience and quality of life for patients and families.

Responsibilities

• Conduct psychosocial assessments for patients and families before and throughout the course of proton therapy.
• Identify emotional, social, financial, transportation, housing, caregiver, employment, and other barriers that may affect access to or completion of treatment.
• Provide individual and family counseling, supportive therapy, crisis intervention, and adjustment-to-illness support.
• Assist patients and caregivers in coping with the emotional impact of cancer diagnosis, treatment, uncertainty, and survivorship.
• Develop individualized psychosocial care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the treatment team.
• Support patients who travel for proton therapy by helping coordinate lodging, transportation, financial assistance, and other practical needs.
• Connect patients and families with community resources, cancer support organizations, financial assistance programs, and other appropriate services.
• Provide education regarding available psychosocial resources, support groups, counseling services, and survivorship programs.
• Assess for safety concerns, including significant emotional distress, and facilitate appropriate referrals or interventions when indicated.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Advocate for patients' needs, preferences, dignity, and access to equitable care.
• Develop or participate in patient support programs, educational initiatives, support groups, and community outreach activities.
• Maintain knowledge of oncology-related psychosocial issues, proton therapy processes, community resources, and applicable healthcare regulations and professional standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Work Experience

• Experience providing social work services in a healthcare, oncology, hospital, or related clinical setting.
• Strong assessment, counseling, communication, advocacy, and crisis-intervention skills.
• Commitment to patient-centered, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed care.
• Experience in oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric oncology, or proton therapy preferred

Required Skills and Abilities

• Experience working with patients who travel for specialized treatment.
• Excellent organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of cancer-related financial assistance, transportation, lodging, disability, and community resources.
• Experience facilitating support groups or psychoeducational programs.

Education/Degree/Qualifications

• Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited social work program.
• Clinical social work licensure (e.g., LCSW or equivalent).

Other

• Proton Social Worker is expected to be flexible in their work shift when the system experiences downtime and based on center volume.

Pay: From $35.00 per hour
